The story behind the hub
Wellingtonhub was founded in 2018 by a small group of Auckland educators who kept noticing the same gap: adult learners in the city had genuine ambition but limited access to education that felt personal, affordable, and locally relevant. Big institutions were too rigid; online platforms were too isolating. The founders — three tutors with backgrounds in secondary education, adult literacy, and professional training — decided to build something that sat between those two extremes. They leased a small space on Queen Street, designed a cohort model that never exceeded 14 learners, and spent the first six months running programmes almost entirely by word of mouth. By 2020 the hub had grown to a team of eight, was running twelve distinct programmes per term, and had served just over 400 learners. The slate-professional aesthetic of the campus — clean lines, calm colours, good light — was a deliberate choice: the founders wanted a space that felt serious without feeling intimidating, professional without feeling corporate.
How we work and what we won't promise
Today Wellingtonhub operates with a core team of six permanent staff and a rotating group of twelve to fifteen specialist tutors. Every tutor is hired against a dual standard: subject expertise and the ability to facilitate a room of adults who have competing demands on their time. We have completed more than 1,400 learner enrolments across six years, with an average programme completion rate of 82%. We work exclusively within the Auckland region — we don't offer online-only programmes, national correspondence courses, or franchise arrangements in other cities. That focus is intentional. Community learning, in our experience, depends on physical proximity and shared local context. What we can't guarantee is outcomes that depend on factors outside the classroom: employer decisions, NZQA marking, or how much time a learner carves out for independent practice. We're honest about that in every admissions conversation. What we can guarantee is that the teaching is well-prepared, the cohort is the right size to actually know each other, and the admin team picks up the phone.

Our tutor pool is kept deliberately small so we can maintain quality standards. Each tutor teaches in one or two subject areas only — depth over breadth, always.

Measured across all cohorts since 2018, this figure is the one we watch most closely. A high completion rate tells us learners found the programme worth finishing — that matters more to us than enrolment numbers.
